Overflowing Shelter, Surge of Intakes, Fresno
Fresno County Animal Shelter, run by Fresno Humane Animal Services (FHAS), is facing an overflow of animals due to a recent surge in intakes, resulting in limited space.
Space limitations only allow room for sick, injured, aggressive (danger to the public), and orphaned nursing animals. Healthy animals cannot be accepted until further notice.[1]
To address this issue, the community is urged to:
- Adopt animals to reduce shelter overpopulation and save lives.
- Become foster parents to provide temporary care, enabling FHAS to assist more animals.
- Aid in reuniting lost pets with their owners by sharing information and staying vigilant.
- Collaborate with local animal rescue groups for support in sheltering or promoting animals.
- Offer temporary shelter on personal properties, with FHAS providing necessary supplies and assistance.
- Utilize social media to share photos of lost animals for a better chance of reunion.
Despite the influx, FHAS continues to offer services such as adoptions, fostering, microchipping, rescue partnerships, and animal control. To enhance efficiency, they’ve implemented new procedures:
- Drive-up services only.
- Call ahead before visiting to streamline operations and ensure staff availability.
- Follow in-person protocols upon arrival, staying in vehicles and contacting FHAS for instructions.
- Access community resources for temporary pet housing if needed.
In short, Fresno County Animal Shelter is seeking public assistance in managing the current overflow of animals by adopting, fostering, reuniting lost pets, collaborating with rescue groups, offering temporary shelter, and utilizing social media. Despite challenges, FHAS remains operational, offering essential services while implementing efficient procedures for public safety and convenience.
