I’m writing to urge you to support the Shelter Transparency Bill. California is facing a serious animal welfare crisis, yet our publicly funded shelters are not required to report even the most basic data about the animals in their care.
This bill is a critical first step toward transparency and accountability. It will require shelters to publish intake and outcome data on their public websites–information the public deserves to see.
While the bill doesn’t yet address all the gaps–such as tracking animals turned away or creating a centralized statewide database–it lays the groundwork for meaningful reform and future improvements.
As your constituent, I believe that data transparency is essential for ethical and effective animal sheltering. Please vote yes on the Shelter Transparency Bill and stand up for animals and the communities that care about them.
Sincerely,
